Pssst…. Voluteering in the USofA

Handbagsandlipstick.com; is not, as you might think, a blog about Handbags and Lipstick but a blog about Life. The reason for the collective name is that the blogger is hoping to encourage a few of her other gorgeous girls to participate in the “movement”, but for now we're stuck with E………

One of those girls is going to volunteer at a summer camp in the USofA. "Actually, I’m quite looking forward to it as I’ve never volunteered in a developed country before and certainly never with 150 or so kids ranging in age from 4-17 all in one place! In the words of an old volunteer buddy from India “yowser!”

We can only hope that there will be follow up blogs detailing her adventure… for from the tone of the blog, this group of girls only celebrate successes.

I particularly liked this entry of the 5 Benefits of Volunteering

Pssst…. Wanna Buy an Island?

james
James Island, a Gulf Island halfway between Victoria and Sidney, is being put up for sale by its reclusive American owner, Craig McCaw. The 780 acres of land features an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, a 5,000 square foot owner’s residence, six guest cottages, and a Western-styled ghost town.

For most of the 20th century, the island was home to an explosives…..

Pssst.... Want to buy some tomatoes? Istanbul Style

pssst-want-to-buy-some-tomatoes
A cold, crisp sunny morning and Istanbul’s some 350 open-air, covered, permanent or bi-weekly street markets (pazar) are gearing up for another day’s brisk trading.

At least, that’s what all the stall holders are hoping, anyway. As the punters begin pushing their way through the often narrow streets or alleyways of the markets, such as Kadıköy’s famous “Balık Pazarı,” cries of “Buyurun!” -- variously (mis-)understood as “Come in!” or even “Help yourself!” -- or the popular “Hoşgeldiniz!” -- “Welcome!” -- punctuate their passage and add to the general cacophony that is the soundtrack of any public space in Turkey and most assuredly, in İstanbul.

Want a job working on San Francisco Bay running a Lighthouse turned Bed-and-Breakfast?

East Brother Light Station, Inc., a non-profit corporation, is seeking applicants for Keepers of East Brother Light Station, an island in San Francisco Bay that is the home of an intact 1874 lighthouse and fog signal. The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard but maintained for public use by the non-profit corporation. Since 1979, it has been operated as one of California’s best-known and unique bed and breakfast inns. The income from operations is used by a group of volunteers to maintain the buildings, which are both a California State Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"Pssst.... Lions" as you walk through KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

lions6
EcoTraining is one of the first companies to conduct formal training programs for nature guides. They are known in the industry as the pioneers and leaders in field guide and nature training. They started in 1993 with a mission to raise the standard of guiding in Africa. EcoTraining is the oldest field guide training company in Africa.

Corne Schalkwyk of EcoTraining takes us on a walk through the famed fever tree forest in the Makuleke concession in the far northern part of the Kruger National Park, and then venturing out onto the open floodplains. It looks to be something to be treasured on any given day. Add to that the whisperings of “Pssst, lions!”, and it turns into something magical. The students currently at Makuleke doing a trails guide course (with Bruce as lead instructor) as part of their yearlong course, where just that fortunate.

Go see what some of them wrote in their logbooks..

Pssst.... Don't tell everyone about this bike ride

Mountain-Biking-440x91
Easily riding along a natural bench trail, crossing the occasional stream you can wind your way out of another hollow, the steep climb to get here is nearly forgotten, nearly. Pedaling past unique rock outcroppings and ancient trees you get the feeling that your glad you brought your bike on this trip to the Ozarks of Arkansas.

Why ride Arkansas? Because it’s the place that everyone else is riding and not telling you about. It’s a place Northern colleges send their cycling teams to train because the roads and weather are perfect in the late winter and early spring. It’s a place where in the dead of winter when many mountain bikers stare longingly at their bikes hanging in the garage, Arkansans are riding sweet ridge-lines with unlimited views, no studded tires, no heavy coats, no worries.

Pssst.... We’ve Got A West End (London) Christmas Secret

Okay, I’ll (Claire Williams) admit it. I love Christmas. I love everything about the festive season: the twinkly lights that adorn every shop window, the fires that crackle in cozy local pubs, the one-click ordering on Amazon that sorts everyone out their presents without me ever having to leave my dented spot on the sofa, and the beauty of Sky+, saving me ever having to miss a single corny Christmas movie whilst I party the nights away at various festive events.

One thing that signifies Christmas to me the most is our annual trip to see a show in the West End. Every year my friends and I traipse through the crowds in Leicester Square and queue up with everyone else in front of one of the variety of neon-lit theatres that decorate the streets. The only thing that lets it down? The less-than-great drudge of restaurants offering numerous variations on, let’s face it, the same congealed pizza and pasta rubbish over and over again.

Pssst.... wanna buy a shyrdak?

What seems like many years ago now, I was driving up to Naryn and as we passed through the town of Kochkor, I saw a sight that made me smile.  Draped over the fences were row upon row of colourful shyrdaks, felt carpets.  There were even shyrdaks laid on the side of the road.  I mentioned this when we got to Naryn and I was told that they were cleaning the carpets.  Apparently, twice a year you should shake the carpet and beat it with a carpet beater, stick or tennis racket, then lay it out in direct sunlight for about three hours.  You shouldn’t try washing it with soap and water nor use a brush or a vacuum cleaner because this can destroy the felt.

The City of San Carlos introduced its website facelift….in stealth mode.
The refresh “went live” on Monday, November 7th. Four days later, the City sent out an e-notify email inviting resident subscribers to check out the “refreshed page.”

The new look is part of the city’s new branding campaign that aims to “market local businesses.” This includes a redesign of the City’s new logo, emphasizing the tagline, “The City of Good Living.” The website has a prominent slider of photos with captions that read: “Live Here. Dine Here. Play Here.”

Pssst…. Thank you, Pass it On!

I once heard a very wise man say that in order to be successful, you need to enlist others to help you and you do that by sharing your dreams and vision.  My dream is to make the world better by helping YOU have a wonderful, rich life by connecting to your history and the world around you, starting with Indianapolis. Seems every week, I get an email with a question or comment about something that sparked a conversation, action or previously unknown interest of an H.I. reader.
