Pssst! Wanna hear a nice, simple way to reduce your plastic use? OK, here it is. Stop using plastic produce bags at the grocery store!

I’m not a Plastic Avenger but the people at the “No Plastic Project” are. We all know that plastic pollutes and nod into submission that we should do more to stop using the crap. So here I am with a stick… reminding you that plastic is BAD! It is very good in many instances, but there are many uses which we can really do without. So stop by the “No Plastic Project” and get some ideas…

Pssst…. Controversy Deepens Over Pesticides and Bee Collapse

honeybee_flight
A controversial new study of honeybee deaths has deepened a bitter dispute over whether the developed world’s most popular pesticides are causing an ecological catastrophe.

Researchers report a direct link between hive health and dietary exposure to neonicotinoid pesticide linked to colony collapse disorder, the mysterious and massive die-off of bees across North America and Europe.

The real question is are you contributing to the die off of the bee population. This deterioration of the bee population is a real problem and something which you might not be (pun not intended) aware of… take a moment and ask yourself if you could be a little bit more considerate of our necessary friends the bees…

We really rely on them.

Pssst…. A description unlike any other I've read

mewithbutterfly
Judith writes a blog of perfume reviews, thoughts, random reflections, and more than likely, Stuff she thinks about.

Now I'm not any kind of connoisseur of anything that I could ever write about in a detailed description, but this girl can write about perfume. This entry is a most amazing description of what she smells in a new perfume (new to her) called “Ormonde Jayne Woman”.

Pssst.... It's called the nap.

paulo+buffa+velvet+sofa+jessgrahamvintag
Did you know?

The term "nap" as it applies to fabric generally refers to the direction in which the open ends of the fibers naturally lie, such as in a velvet piece. Normally, the fabric nap would be in the down direction. However, to achieve a darker, richer color, sometimes these fabrics are used with the nap in the up direction. This darker color is the result of the reduced reflection of light off the fibers.

Pssst.... Did you hear that gossiping may be good for you?

health-011912-002-617x416
There seems to be a fair amount of research into the benefits of Gossip.

Researchers at UC Berkeley have determined that water cooler chatter and idle office tattling can have stress-relieving benefits, provided it is the correct sort of gossip that is helpful to others and not demeaning.

Pssst… The secret is out on Twitter!

Stepxen opened up a Twitter account in March of 2009. He wasn’t really sure why other than he needed a Twitter account.

"I was very confused about the real purpose of it. I still see people today that are really confused about what the heck it’s even good for. I have learned recently that it is a pretty neat tool to have at your disposal."

"I’ve always kind of thought that having a Facebook account kept you in touch with everyone but we end up having friends, people who add us because we have friends in common, former friends, enemies, etc… And then we have to see what all of these people are doing or thinking, or they may comment on what we are doing ..."

"Twitter on the other hand is a little different, you follow someone that you want to follow, you see what they say… You just read a “tweet” from someone and keep going... "

So Stepxen gets it.. he get's Twitter... and wrote a nice explanation for us... Drop by and read his stuff!

Pssst.... Have I got a program for you?

I experienced many powerful moments while attending the Arts, Science and the Brain Conference last week in Toronto. The gathering, convened by Artssmarts, sought to engage participants in questions about how learning in the 21st century could be informed and enriched by current understandings of brain science. In particular, I was inspired by a focus on how the brain is affected by participation in artistic experiences, a focus which helped to frame the conference's perspective and approach.

A cyber worm experts believe was designed to knock out Iran's nuclear facilities has the security industry seeing red -- and rightly so. Replicating the virus would be easy, say experts, thanks to an easily accessible black market for destructive programming code.

Pssst.... Rare IPv4 Addresses For Sale!

In February, the news broke that the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority had allocated the final blocks of IPv4 addresses to the five Regional Internet Registries to be distributed to parties within their respective geographic zones. Since then, some of those registries have depleted their pools of allocated addresses; the rest will likely run out soon. Simply put, the demand for IPv4 addresses from businesses, organizations, Internet users and others has exceeded the available supply. This is, of course, a problem. But what does it mean at a practical level?

Pssst.... Wanna Know About the New Apple Store?

New Yorkers are protective of Grand Central Terminal, that Beaux-Arts masterpiece built in 1913 and restored in 1998. So, when word seeped out that Apple planned a store in the balconies of the great hall, there was bound to be a lot of curiosity. We certainly were curious. What did Apple have in mind? A large glass apple rivaling the great clock?

Pssst.... Don’t tell the creationists, but scientists don’t have a clue how life began

Exactly 20 years ago, I wrote an article for Scientific American that, in draft form, had the headline above. My editor nixed it, so we went with something less dramatic: "In the Beginning…: Scientists are having a hard time agreeing on when, where and—most important—how life first emerged on the earth." That editor is gone now, so I get to use my old headline, which is even more apt today.

Pssst.... Google is testing new "social search" feature, steering away from pure S.E.O.

Web publishers are starting to believe, according to The New York Times, that the most effective way to build a following is to find readers on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, an approach being coined as S.M.O., or social media optimization. This could have multiple effects, one of which is setting a standard for the quality of articles floating around in cyberspace and crawled by Google, since the best way to get links on Twitter is to write something people want to read and share with friends.

Why young people pirate (Pssst: It's not just about money)

Why do the younger generation and students pirate music, software and television and movies? Failing main street shops? Or plain old exploitation of weak systems? It’s not all about the money.
